Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

IS THERE A VERRSION AVAILABLE FOR MAC or LINUX?

No. PSA is a relational database product. It requires Microsoft Access or Access Runtime to function. You can install Windows on a Mac with Bootcamp and then run the program. I have not had any luck getting Access or Access Runtime to work with Wine under Linux.

YOU GET A MESSAGE SAYING READ ONLY...OR THE APPLICATION OPENS BUT YOU CAN'T ENTER DATA

You get a message at the top of your screen that says "Read Only: This database has been opened read-only. You can only change data in the linked tables. To make design changes, save a copy of the database"; or the application opens and buttons work but you can't enter data.

Probable Cause: You have read only permission to the C:\Problem Solving folder, or files in the folder.

Solution: Open Windows Explorer and find the folder C:\Problem Solving. Right click on the folder C:\Problem Solving. Click on Properties from the drop down menu. Click on the Security tab. Look for Users under Group or User names. If there is no Group called Users(Your Computer), click the Add button and add the group Users. Make sure the Users group has full control by ticking the box marked Full Control. If the message still appears you may have to repeat the process above for the file called PSA XXX_be.accdb (where XXX is the version of PSA - Free, Net, or Pro.

YOU GET ONE OF SEVERAL POSSIBLE SECURITY WARNINGS

Probable Cause: This is usually caused by the security settings in the version of Access you are running.

Solution: Open whatever version of Access you have installed. In Access 2007 click on the Office icon (round button with 4 little squares inside) in the top left hand corner of your screen. In Access 2010 and 2013 click the File tab. Click on Options. Click on Trust Center at the bottom of the list. Click on the Trust Center Settings button at the bottom right of the Trust Center panel. Click Trusted Locations toward the top of the list on the left. Click the Add New Location button at the bottom of the panel on the right. Enter C:\Problem Solving as the Path. Tick the box labelled "Subfolders of this location are also trusted". If you are using a network version tick the box labelled "Allow Trusted Locations on my Network". Still in Trust Center Settings, click on Macro Settings on the left. In the panel on the right Click the radio button marked "Enable all Macros (not recommended, potentially dangerous code can run)".

If you are using Access Runtime follow the instructions here to modify the registry manually.

YOU ARE ASKED IF I WANT TO USE MICROSOFT ACCESS OR ACCESS RUNTIME TO OPEN THE FILE

If you installed Access Runtime version with a version of Access alreay installed, it may create a conflict. Uninstall Access Runtime and choose Microsoft Access to handle the database.

THE APPLICATION DOES NOT SEEM TO WORK IN WINDOWS 8, 8.1 or 10

All versions of PSA should work from every Windows desktop. The most common problems are those above. First try the steps above if you have a version of Microsoft Access installed.

If you continue to have problems with the application on Windows 8 or 10 please send an email to support@problemsolving.com.au stating what version of Microsoft Access is installed on your Windows operating system and whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit. We can compile a version that should work for you and send it via email.
